A Work-Live-Play-Learn Hub
One-north was planned by JTC as a research and business hub for Singapore’s knowledge economy. Its precincts bring together biomedical science, technology, media, engineering, start-ups and education. Biopolis supports biomedical research, Fusionopolis focuses on science and technology, and Mediapolis serves the media ecosystem.
Parks and conserved buildings in areas such as Wessex add greenery and historical texture. The district’s work-live-play-learn model is designed to encourage collaboration between companies, researchers, students and entrepreneurs.
Biopolis and Fusionopolis place laboratories and companies within walking distance of each other, while LaunchPad @ one-north supports young start-ups. Nearby, Wessex Estate’s black-and-white houses offer a quieter link with the area’s colonial past.

1. Rochester Park Bungalows
Rochester Park’s bungalows once housed British officers and their families. Wide verandahs and retained architectural details preserve features of that residential landscape. Their adaptation for later uses shows how historic buildings can accommodate new activities while maintaining connections with their original character.
2. one-north Park
one-north Park forms a green corridor linking developments such as Biopolis and Fusionopolis. At the Biopolis edge, planted slopes sit alongside research buildings, illustrating how shared landscapes contribute to the district’s planning and connect its different working environments.
3. Biopolis
Biopolis brings biomedical research organisations together within a shared district. Its activities span areas such as drug discovery and medical technology, reflecting Singapore’s investment in a knowledge economy. The precinct provides a contrast with the conserved residential landscape of nearby Rochester Park.
Route 2 Wessex
Discover Wessex through its surviving housing forms and a longstanding neighbourhood gathering place.

1. Wessex Walk-up Apartments
Built in the 1940s, Wessex’s walk-up apartment blocks preserve a different housing scale from the bungalows commonly associated with colonial estates. Their repeated forms and spacing reflect an earlier residential landscape that continues to accommodate everyday neighbourhood life.
2. Wessex Semi-detached Houses
Wessex’s semi-detached houses form another part of its 1940s residential landscape. Their smaller scale and garden settings contrast with the nearby apartment blocks, revealing how different housing types existed within the same estate and contributed to its distinctive character.
3. Colbar Neighbourhood Frontage
Colbar opened in 1953 and became a familiar setting for meals and social encounters. Its history complements Wessex’s residential buildings, showing how gathering places contribute to neighbourhood continuity alongside homes. The business’s founding date is distinct from the age of its current premises.
